1857:<\/strong> Thomas Hughes publishes TOM BROWN\u2019S SCHOOL DAYS<\/strong>. This book, with its description of the game played at Rugby School, is widely believed to have been the driving force to popularize the game.<\/p>\n

1858:<\/strong> Scottish school Merchiston played Royal High in the first inter-school match<\/strong>. All this youthful aggression had to burst out of the campus confines eventually, right?<\/p>\n

1864:<\/strong> \u2026Or was it Clifton versus Marlborough that started the inter-school competitions? Either way, we are on the road to global competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1871:<\/strong> Twenty-one clubs meet in London to form the RFU.<\/strong> Well, we need some organization, don\u2019t we?<\/p>\n

1895:<\/strong> The Northern Union<\/strong> is formed. It is the great split between Union and League<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

1987:<\/strong> The first rugby World Cup<\/strong> is held in New Zealand and won by the All Blacks.<\/p>\n

1995:<\/strong> The IRB gives in to universal pressure and allows the Union game to turn professional.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2014: A new blog, ruggerus.com,<\/strong> is born to trumpet the great qualities of rugby union, and, examine the bad ones as well.<\/p>\n

\u2026 No, wait, seriously, what\u2019s the next milestone?<\/strong> Argentina beating Australia in the Rugby Championship, tipping the scales of power in the southern hemisphere, and thereby the world?<\/p>\n

Or, will it be the inclusion of rugby 7\u2019s in the coming Olympics, bringing the union game to the formerly unconverted masses?<\/p>\n
